What’s a crypto mining rig & how do you build one?

Cryptocurrency mining is crucial in the digital currency ecosystem, enabling transaction verification and creating new coins. Crypto mining rigs are in the middle of the crypto mining process as they perform complex calculations and solve cryptographic puzzles. Building these mining rigs may not be as straightforward, and several considerations for efficient crypto mining. This article will dive into what a crypto mining rig is and the building process.  


What is a crypto mining rig?


A crypto mining rig is a custom-made, powerful setup consisting of various components that work together to mine cryptocurrencies. These components include a graphics processing unit (GPU), motherboard, power supply unit (PSU), memory (RAM), central processing unit (CPU), storage, cooling system, and other necessities.

When building a mining rig, you must select the right components and assemble them correctly to optimize the system for optimal performance. Crypto mining rigs have different technical features, but crypto miners’ concern is based on the hash rate and energy use. If the hashrate and energy use is high, crypto miners cannot make sufficient profits, which costs them more than the mining rewards they could generate.


Types of crypto mining rigs


Crypto mining rigs are different depending on the hardware they use:


CPU mining rigs are the easiest to install and set up. In early crypto mining days, people could use a CPU since the hashing power required to mine crypto was low. When more people began mining cryptos, there was more competition; miners needed more hashing power than a CPU could offer. Usually, CPUs offer somewhere between 8 and 20 kh/s. 

CPUs are also costly; miners end up paying huge electrical bills. Meanwhile, your computer may have heating problems. However, their advantage is their availability; you only need a few programs to begin mining. 


GPU mining rigs are popular among crypto miners and harness the power of graphics processing units (GPUs) for mining cryptocurrencies. GPUs are efficient at parallel computations. Its computation is in mh/s, whereby a modern GPU hash rate is about 20 mh/s. More advanced GPUs, such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, can provide up to 121 mh/s, about 4,000 times a CPU’s speed. Miners can build several concurrent rigs to boost the hashing power when needed. 

However, a major disadvantage is their cost. High-end graphic cards are expensive, and most miners cannot purchase them for mining.


ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) is a mining rig you can buy and configure for crypto mining. These miners came up in 2012 and are 200 times more powerful than a CPU. These mining rigs are the most preferred by miners. 

However, they are very costly, and their energy consumption is high. In addition, they have limited ability to mine some cryptos. 


Things necessary to build a crypto mining rig


Before building a crypto mining rig, you need to purchase some mining rig components. These include:

Mining rig frame

A mining rig frame is the casing holding all the components together. This mining frame can either be custom-built or purchased as a pre-built one. If you are starting, you can buy a stackable mining frame of six to eight GPUs which should include enough space for cooling fans. 


A GPU graphics card is an important rig component. As a crypto miner, you should remember that an expensive GPU does not necessarily mean more profits. However, keeping the hash rate high for as little electricity as possible will give you the necessary profits. 


Mining rigs need enough RAM to store the temporary data from rig operations; using a RAM of between 4GB and 12GB  is enough for starting mining operations. However, remember that your motherboard must support the RAM you employ. RAM has no hashing power impact, but the higher the RAM, the better the initial plot files are created.


The motherboard is the hardware that connects all the components. It supports all the GPUs and graphic cards you will use for the mining. The motherboard you use has to support the GPUs and RAM you want to use.


Crypto miners need a hard drive or SSD to store more than 50GB of permanent data storage. Notably, storage has the least impact on performance; hence you can use  SSD or HDD, depending on your preference.


Some crypto miners who want to begin mining prefer to use CPUs alone since it’s a processor. However, they have to be highly efficient to achieve mining rewards. Meanwhile, CPUs do not affect the GPU performance; hence when employing GPUs for crypto mining, the role of the CPU is secondary. Hence, the Intel Core i3, i5, i7 or any other modern alternative is enough.

Power supply unit

A power supply unit (PSU) is crucial for stable mining operations. A rig with three to six GPUs uses about 1,200 watts of power. Usually, more than 1,200W is required to power six GPUs, a CPU, memory, a motherboard, and other components. Power supplies are rated Plus, Plus Bronze, Plus Silver, Plus Gold, and Plus Platinum, depending on the efficiency. Most miners use Plus Platinum or Plus Gold rating for mining. 

Other requirements

Apart from the components above, more things are necessary for building the rig. 

PCI risers are where the GPU plugs into and helps you attach all graphic cards and accessories you need directly to the motherboard. Meanwhile, you will need a cryptocurrency wallet to store your cryptos, a reliable internet connection and a flash drive that can hold 5GB capacity. 

For software, you can use mining software such as EasyMiner, Kryptex and CGMiner and operating systems such as RaveOS and Awesome Miner. 


Step by step: How to build a crypto mining rig


So far, we have discussed the crypto mining rig components for building the mining rig. These components can be put together to build a mining rig: 

Step 1: Attach the motherboard

Attaching the motherboard is a simple process. Place the motherboard outside the mining frame after ensuring that the lever protecting your CPU socket is in the release position. Ensure it’s on top of a static-free surface like a foam box.

Step 2: Processor attachment

The next step is to place the processor on the motherboard and mark the CPU and sockets to connect them correctly. In addition, follow the alignment of pins, so keep your manual at hand to avoid errors.

Step 3: Installing the RAM 

The next step is carefully placing the RAM module into the RAM socket on the motherboard brackets. The RAM has to be in the correct position since it only locks one way into the socket. 

Step 4: PSU attachment

Attach the PSU to the motherboard. The CPU has an 8-pin connector that will go into the motherboard slot nearest the processor. 

Step 5: USB risers attachment 

The GPU is connected to the motherboard by USB risers. They should be inserted into the motherboard’s PCI slots.

Step 6: Attaching GPUs

The GPUs are then secured to the frame with USB drivers and PCI-e 6+2 power connectors plugged into the GPUs. Before turning on the mining equipment, double-check that all wires are properly connected. After confirmation, you can begin mining.
